Why fresh food suits skin & coat

Skin is the first place a poor diet shows — and the first to thank a good one.

🐟

Natural omega 3 & 6

Real fish and meat carry the healthy fats skin barriers and glossy coats are built from — in food form, not a supplement pill.

🥩

One protein, no additives

Many irritated skins are diet-linked. Single-protein recipes with zero artificial colours or preservatives make it easy to feed clean and skip triggers.

💧

Hydration from the bowl

~70% natural moisture supports skin hydration from the inside — something dry kibble simply cannot do.

The ingredients doing the work

The specific nutrients skin and fur are made from — and which recipe carries them.

🐟

Omega-3 (EPA & DHA) — from fish

The skin's outer barrier is built from lipids, and omega-3 is its key raw material. A strong barrier holds moisture in and irritants out — which is why omega-3 is the single most-studied nutrient for dry, flaky, itch-prone skin. Our fish recipes carry it naturally; no capsule needed.

🍗

Omega-6 — from poultry

Omega-6 keeps skin-cell membranes supple and gives fur its surface sheen. The balance of omega-6 to omega-3 matters more than either alone — fresh meat and fish deliver both in food form, in proportions the body recognises.

🥩

Complete protein — the coat's raw material

Hair is ~90% keratin, a protein rich in sulfur amino acids (methionine, cysteine) that come almost entirely from quality muscle meat. A dull, brittle coat is very often a protein-quality problem wearing a fur disguise.

🚫

What's NOT in the bowl

No artificial colours, preservatives or mystery "meal" — the additives most often implicated when skin reacts to food. Sometimes the biggest skin upgrade is what you remove, not what you add.

When will you see results?

Days 1–7
Transition week — mix fresh in gradually. No visible skin change yet; the new raw materials are just arriving.
Weeks 2–4
First signs: less dander and flaking, and scratching often eases as artificial additives leave the diet completely.
Weeks 4–8
New fur starts growing in stronger and glossier at the roots — you'll feel softness before you clearly see shine.
Weeks 8–12
Full coat turnover. The old, poorly-fed fur has largely been replaced and the difference is visible across the whole coat. This is the honest timeline — anyone promising a new coat in a week is selling something.

Every pet is different — these timelines are typical, not guaranteed. Symptoms that persist or worsen belong at the vet.

How it works

Pick a single protein

Fish is the classic coat-friendly choice; chicken and lamb work beautifully too.

Transition slowly

Mix increasing amounts of fresh food over 7 days.

Watch the coat change

Most parents see a softer, shinier coat within 4–8 weeks of consistent fresh feeding.

What it costs

Fresh meals from ~9 SAR a day

Real numbers from our menu: a typical cat eats ~140 g a day (13–21 SAR on autoship depending on recipe), a small dog ~200 g (9–14 SAR), bigger dogs more. Build My Box calculates your pet's exact daily price.

Common questions

What food is best for a pet with itchy skin?
A simple, clean diet: one real protein, no artificial additives, and natural omega 3 & 6 fats. If itching is intense, constant, or the skin is broken, see your vet first — food supports healthy skin, it does not treat skin disease.
Can food really make the coat shinier?
Yes. Coats are built from protein and fats, so the quality of both shows directly in the fur. Most pet parents notice a difference within 4–8 weeks.
When should I see a vet instead?
Open sores, bald patches, ear infections, or non-stop scratching need a diagnosis first. This page is about everyday nutrition, not treatment.
Which recipe should I start with?
Fish is the favourite for skin and coat thanks to its natural omega-3. If your pet prefers other proteins, chicken and lamb still deliver quality fats.
Which nutrients matter most for skin and coat?
In order: omega-3 (EPA/DHA) for the skin barrier, quality protein for the keratin the fur is built from, omega-6 for suppleness and sheen, and zinc + B vitamins (naturally present in real meat) for skin-cell renewal.
My pet itches mostly in certain seasons — is that food?
Seasonal itching usually points to environmental allergies (dust, pollen) rather than diet. Good nutrition still strengthens the skin barrier that has to cope with it — but a pattern like that deserves a vet diagnosis, not just a food change.
